Most beautiful plane ever?
![]() 04/18/2014 at 18:00 |

The tail always killed it for me
![]() 04/18/2014 at 18:02 |

Wrong.

Yes and no. It's got such a serious 40's design vibe. But those curves, man, those curves!

Seems to be two types of plane enthusiasts, in my experience.
Do you think the Connie is beautiful?
I say no, but keep meeting people who do. It's not ugly, just a bit inelegant. Like a duck. I like ducks, and I like and respect the Connie, but no, not the Most Beautiful Plane Ever.
My answer to that might be this, the Dragon Rapide. Even its name is beautiful.

Apart from the tail its spectacular, definitely a good candidate for most beautiful

The Dragon Rapide is on my list. But not that I did use a question mark. The floor is open.

cough, cough, AHEM

If it weren't for that tail design, it would have a stabilizer the size of the Peacemaker.

...and suddenly I realized that I was completely naked.

Funny, I just noticed that for the first time when I posted it. I've had that pic in my collection for years.

Not only beautiful, but the template that almost every other large jet aircraft has followed.

Silly rabbit!

Criteria? cause, um...

The B-47 is also at the top of my list for the most beautiful airplane ever. It just screams speed, and the epitome of the 50's design aesthetic. Gorgeous.
![]() 04/18/2014 at 18:09 |

Whatever you want. Note that I used a question mark. The floor is open.

I would add, though, that the Blackbird falls into the "so ugly it's beautiful" category. Maybe "wicked" is a better word, at least for me. But in a good way.

Very true, the lesser of two visual evils
![]() 04/18/2014 at 18:13 |
|
I've always found it a bit ungainly. I see where you're coming from though.
![]() 04/18/2014 at 18:13 |

I know its an easy one, and there are probably prettier, but I don't care...this thing screams good looking to me. I've also been fond of F16's since forever too
So proportioned...
![]() 04/18/2014 at 18:14 |

Not so much visual as practical. Splitting the tail into three gives you the same area but reduces the overall size.
![]() 04/18/2014 at 18:16 |

Until they started adding conformal fuel tanks. Then it got funky looking.
![]() 04/18/2014 at 18:19 |
|
gah! I hadn't seen that...and I wish I hadn't
![]() 04/18/2014 at 18:19 |
|
Yea, I was just saying that visually the three tail sections is better than one, and a hell of a lot more practical especially if it faces the possibility of being shot at

Sorry.

Bigger than even my mind can imagine...

B1B are sexy as all get out too. I guess im into the fast and deadly stuff, not the nostalgia stuff. Though a DC3 is great looking
![]() 04/18/2014 at 18:38 |

It's pretty but this is the one for me^
![]() 04/18/2014 at 18:44 |

Another one on my list. Interestingly, somebody else commented on how the tail of the Connie turned him off. And I have to admit, that while I think the Staggerwing is gorgeous, I always felt the vertical stabilizer was a miss for me. For the design language, it's perfect, but for me, it's just a bit funky.

Myu father used to be a mech on the Super Constellation before becoming a liner pilot. Beautiful plane indeed.
![]() 04/18/2014 at 19:17 |

Way to remind me I was born in the wrong era. If Connies and DC3s were still in our skies I'd already be a pilot
![]() 04/18/2014 at 19:25 |

Get out of my head. I miss when there were B1Bs stationed at McConnell. DC3 are just all around classic but I think I prefer the Constellation.

Some of my favourites

It may very well be the most beautiful plane ever. When I am a billionaire, my private plane will be one of these with a restored retro-luxury interior.

Hmmm.

I respectfully submit my two favorites:

Kinja is borked again....cant edit my own post to fix the top pic.

Tupolev Tu-114 Rossiya. Pure levels of awesome and still holds the title as fastest propeller driven aircraft since 1960.
![]() 04/19/2014 at 15:28 |

Interesting point, I guess I've never really focused in it's tail too much. As for the Constellation, I think it's wide tail matches the wingspan nicely.

Short answer: Yes.
![]() 04/27/2014 at 14:55 |

That cockpit canopy just doesn't do it for me. Looks like wart. Hell of an airplane, though.

That thing must have been as loud as hell. I'd love to see one.
